My Top 3 Video Game Tunes… And 17 Others

The Top 3

1. Kokiri Forest The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)

When it comes to my childhood and video games, this trumps even Emerald Hill Zone and Bob-omb Battlefield.

2. Hill Top Zone Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive)

The wailing sax and the colours of this level are perfect.

3. Hyrule Field – The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)

Okay, I’ll pick one word.

And 17 Others

(in no particular order)

4. Cool, Cool Mountain Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)

It’s so happy, hyperactive and snowy.

5. Casino Night Zone Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Mega Drive)

I once found online an album of jazzed up Sonic themes. The Super Sonic/Casino Night track was awesome. As it happens, the original is equally so. And, again; how beautiful does the level look? Another sublime pairing.

6. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 (PlayStation)

Everyone knows this is the best of the lot.

7. Green GreensKirby’s Dream Land (Game Boy)

I just love it. It’s why I’d pick Green Greens on any Smash Bros. title every time.

8. Jolly Roger Bay Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)

A relatively mundane course, but the music is just so chilled.

9. City Street Streets of Rage (Mega Drive)

The best opener ever. Pure class.

10. Click Clock Wood Banjo-Kazooie (Nintendo 64)

I love all the music in this game. Click Clock Wood? All seasons.

I love this game.

11. Delfino Plaza  Super Mario Sunshine (GameCube)

I’m a sucker for the accordion. This track just fits so perfectly with the course. Everything about it is fantastic. Nintendo’s composers sure do write some amazing music.

12. James Pond II: Robocod (Mega Drive)

Does it get annoying? Yes. Do I love it anyway? Hell yes.

13. Starlight Zone – Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive)

I find this so wonderfully relaxing, and think it’s just a beautiful piece of music.

14. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PlayStation 2)

The ’80s.

15. Streets TimeSplitters 2 (PlayStation 2)

Capture the Flag on this map was my favourite thing about the game. Plus the music was quality.

And not forgetting these chaps, of course…

16. Chatterbox FM Grand Theft Auto III (PlayStation 2)

[no comment necessary]

17. SSX (PlayStation 2)

Rahzel. ‘Song for Dot’. I can’t remember the rest – but it was awesome.

18. Sonic BoomSonic CD (Mega CD / PC)

There were two soundtracks to this. The song ‘Sonic Boom’ in the opening FMV sequence was awesome. The FMV itself was even cooler. Watch it here.

19. Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding (PlayStation)

The second best.

20. Pokémon Red and Blue

No single town. All of it. Who among us, if they heard any of this music, wouldn’t be transported back to their 11-year-old self?

I had Red.

On a side note: I still remember going with my best friend Andy to see the First Movie at (what I think was) the beginning of the Summer Holidays.
